Program Outline: English For Business 1

 

Brief Program Description

English for Business (Foundation) is a 24 week course that focuses on helping students to familiarize themselves with the language of business in a variety of contexts. This intensive course will enable students to gain a firm foundation in acquiring the knowledge, theory, business vocabulary and public speaking skills to become more fluent and confident in the workplace.

 

After 12 weeks of full time courses, students will proceed to fulfill their Work Experience component (12 weeks) of the program.

 

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the entire course, it opens students to opportunities in entry level positions such as Administration Assistant, Front Desk Clerk, Marketing Assistant and many more across a wide range of industries in Canada

 

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Applicants who wish to qualify as Domestic Students must provide proof of their legal status as Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Applicants must have completed high school and ideally have commenced on post-secondary studies.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed 400 hours of work experience (Applicants must show proof of employment) OR,
  • Complete an admission test and oral interview with a passing score of 75%.
  • International applicants must complete an admission test and oral interview with a passing score of 75%.
  • Applicants must complete and submit an admissions form to the college.
  • Applicants must pay $150.00 for domestic students and $200.00 for international students as a non-refundable enrolment and registration fee.
  • Applicants must read and sign to the effect that they have understood and agree with the college’s policies and procedures, any updates or inserts and the enrolment and registration agreement.
  • Applicants must provide a copy of the highest diploma or degree that they have completed.  They must also submit a transcript for the above diploma/degree.  All necessary documents must be provided in a hardcopy format.
  • Applicants must provide proof of medical insurance.

Students can access online Market Leader resources from the computer lab.

 

Program Duration

672 hours, 3 months in-class instruction (336 hours) with 3 months work experience (336 hours). Students must complete classes before work experience. For work experience, students are responsible to cover the costs associated with accommodation/transport/etc.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes - Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Compose an industry specific resume, cover letter and thank you letter for the purpose of a job interview.
  2. Answer difficult interview questions during a job interview
  3. Be aware of Canadian business and negotiation culture
  4. Identify their own working style and team interaction style
  5. Familiarize themselves with the skills and attributes needed in the Canadian workplace.
  6. Exhibit public speaking and presentation skills
  7. Handle various negotiation situations
  8. Exhibit good customer service skills and problem-solving skills
  9. Practice business slang, jargon and buzzwords.
  10. Practice a wide range of business idioms
  11. Write an effective business proposal
  12. Manage an effective meeting and write action points/minutes of a meeting

Student Progress/ Assessment Methods

Grades are composed of 4 elements: Presentations (50%), Tests and Quizzes (20%), Class Participation (20%) and Attendance (10%).

 

Attendance Expectations - Students will maintain a minimum of 80% attendance.

 

Graduation Requirements

Students must achieve a minimum of 70% and successfully complete their Work Experience. Students must also maintain a minimum of 80% attendance throughout the duration of the program and are expected to complete all exams, quizzes and assignments, as well as participate in all discussions and activities.
